When a Great Terroir Meets a Challenging Vintage

When a Great Terroir Meets a Challenging Vintage

First Encounter

There are some châteaux that impress you the first time you visit.

And there are others that reveal more of themselves every time you return.

For me, Château Figeac belongs to the second category.

On the morning of the 2025 En Primeur tastings,

once everyone had arrived, we were invited directly into the château’s tasting room.

No long introductions.

No formal speeches.

This was a professional tasting.

Everyone knew why they were there,

and the wine was already waiting.

The tasting table sits inside a glass-walled room overlooking the vineyards.

Natural light gently filled the space, reflecting off the rows of glasses prepared for each guest.

Everything felt calm, elegant, and effortless.

And of course, one of the most photographed corners of the room is the display of bottles in different sizes behind the tasting table.

A small insider tip for anyone visiting Figeac in the future:

You can ask to take photos.

The château is surprisingly welcoming to both wine lovers and photography lovers alike.

First Steps

One thing brought smiles to the table before the tasting had even begun.

Before serving the wine, the team poured a small amount into every glass to rinse them.

And the wine they used for rinsing?

Château Figeac 2025 itself.

Several people looked at each other and laughed.

“That’s a very generous way to rinse glasses.”

As for us…

We felt a little sorry for the wine.

Understanding the Vintage

The 2025 vintage was not an easy one in Bordeaux.

The growing season was particularly hot and dry,

and many vineyards experienced significant water stress throughout the summer.

What makes Figeac interesting is how well it seemed to handle these conditions.

Jean-Pierre Romaric and the technical team explained that one of Figeac’s key advantages lies beneath the surface.

Under the gravel soils sits a layer of blue clay.

This clay acts as a natural water reserve,

helping the vines cope with extreme summer heat while preserving freshness and balance.

As a result, the berries were around 20–30% smaller than usual.

Yet they showed remarkable concentration and aromatic complexity.

Harvest took place between September 1st and September 19th,

making it one of the earliest and fastest harvests of recent years.

Yields reached only 25 hl/ha.

As this figure was mentioned, several people around the table quietly nodded.

In Bordeaux, 25 hl/ha is not a number you hear every day.

It tells its own story about the level of selection carried out at the château.

The final blend of Château Figeac 2025 is:

38% Merlot30% Cabernet Franc32% Cabernet Sauvignon

With an alcohol level of only 13%.

For such a warm vintage, this is a particularly impressive figure, reflecting the freshness and balance that the team was able to preserve.

After hearing the story of the vintage, there was only one question left.

Would all of this be reflected in the glass?

From the Glass

The answer appeared almost immediately.

The first thing that stood out was precision.

Delicate floral notes of peony emerged first.

They were followed by fresh red fruits, white spices, and a subtle graphite note that has become one of Figeac’s signatures.

On the palate, the structure is clear and beautifully defined.

Yet the tannins feel incredibly fine, almost like velvet powder.

The wine gradually expands across the palate, revealing layer after layer of detail.

Freshness, depth, fruit, structure, and energy all seem perfectly aligned.

What impressed me most was that no single grape variety seemed to play the leading role.

Instead, the wine felt like an orchestra in which every instrument has its own part to play.

No voice dominates.Nothing feels missing.

In the end, what you experience is not the sound of each instrument individually, but the harmony of the entire composition.

It combines complexity, freshness, structure, depth, and elegance in a way that feels completely natural.

Everything seems exactly where it should be.

It also reminded me of several great Bordeaux vintages ending in “5” — particularly 2005 and 2015.

Of course, it is still far too early to make comparisons.

But Figeac 2025 is certainly one of the wines that makes you start asking the question.

Beyond the Glass

After the tasting, we were invited to visit the château’s new winery.

Completed only recently, it is an impressive space where stainless steel tanks stand in elegant rows beneath high ceilings.

And right in the middle was a red carpet.

Now, when you have a red carpet…

And several women in the group…

You can probably guess what happened next.

For a few minutes, the professional tasting atmosphere disappeared.

And Fashion Week Saint-Émilion officially began.

People took turns walking the carpet, posing for photos,

and embracing their inner supermodel.

Laughter echoed through the cellar.

It was a lovely reminder that wine does not only create memories in the glass.

Sometimes, it creates memories between people as well.

After the Glass

If someone asked me today:

“Is Château Figeac 2025 worth considering En Primeur?”

My answer would be yes.

This is a wine that deserves serious attention.

Not because of scores.

Not because of reputation.

But because of what is in the glass.

It reflects a château that deeply understands its terroir and knows how to preserve balance even in challenging conditions.

The 2025 vintage may not be remembered as an easy year in Bordeaux.

But sometimes, we do not truly understand the value of a great terroir in perfect vintages.

We understand it when nature becomes difficult.

And when, despite those challenges, the wine still manages to preserve its freshness, balance, and identity.

For me, Château Figeac 2025 is one of the most beautiful examples of that story.
