Lafite Rothschild 2025 – The Lucky Hand

On the "En Primeur" tasting table at Lafite Rothschild this year sat a small pack of postcards.

Printed in bold red letters were two simple words:

“The Lucky Hand”

And underneath:

“Place your Bets…”

At first, I smiled.

The language felt more at a casino than at a First Growth château.

But as I read through the cards, tasted the wines, and listened to the story of the 2025 vintage,

I began to feel that Lafite was not telling the story of the year through numbers or weather reports.

They were telling it through a game.

And the more I tried to understand that simple phrase,

the more I felt this was one of the simplest — yet deepest — En Primeur presentations I had seen this year.

Because Lafite never explains the meaning directly.

They simply place the cards in front of us and allow each person to interpret them in their own way.

The more I looked at the campaign, the more I felt Lafite was playing on two levels at once.

The first level was the vintage itself — the “good cards” each player received.

The second level was the wines, each one becoming a card in the hand.

And once I looked at it that way, everything began to connect.

What Does a Lucky Hand Look Like?

At first, I assumed "The Lucky Hand" referred to a lucky person.

But the more I thought about it, the more I felt it might mean something else.

Not one lucky card.

But several good cards arriving in the hands of different players before coming together to create a game worth playing.

If I had to interpret the 2025 vintage, I would say there were three important cards.

And each one landed in different hands.

♦️ Card One: Nature

The first card belonged to the winegrower.

Because 2025 was not an easy vintage.

A wet winter.

A dry spring.

An intense summer.

By mid-August, many vines were clearly showing signs of stress.

Yet every time the season seemed to become difficult, Pauillac appeared to draw another good card.

Rain arrived on June 24th.

Again on July 20th.

And once more during the final weekend of August.

Not enough to change everything overnight.

But enough to restore balance at exactly the right moment.

Like drawing the card you need when the game begins to turn against you.

For the winegrower, this was the first good card.

A gift from nature.

♠️ Card Two : Savoir-Faire

But having good cards does not guarantee victory.

What matters is knowing how to play them.

And perhaps that was the second card.

Not luck. But experience.

Knowledge. Judgment.

Knowing when to wait.

When to harvest.

And when to let something go.

Throughout the season, hundreds of decisions are made.

Yet in the end, people like us rarely remember those decisions.

We only remember the result in the glass.

And perhaps that is the true definition of savoir-faire:

The most important decisions become almost invisible.

What makes Château Lafite Rothschild great may not be receiving the best cards.

It may be knowing how to play the cards it has been given better than anyone else.

♥️ Card Three : Opportunity

The more I thought about it, the more I felt the final card was not in the vineyard.

Nor in the blending room.

It was sitting right in front of us on the tasting table.

Because En Primeur itself is a form of wager.

We are choosing to buy a wine that has not yet been bottled.

A wine that is not yet ready to drink.

A wine whose future is still unwritten.

In that sense, the phrase:

“Place your Bets…”

feels less like a marketing slogan and more like an invitation.

An invitation to decide for ourselves.

To keep.

Or to fold.

To walk away.

Or to place a bet on the future.

And perhaps that is the third card.

Opportunity.

From the Glass

What makes the concept even more fascinating is that Lafite did not stop with The Lucky Hand.

The wines themselves became cards in the same game.

🍷 Duhart-Milon – “All In”

A full commitment to the potential of its gravel soils.

Dark fruit, clear structure, and an energy that drives forward from the very first sip.

The tannins are firm and focused, carrying the wine confidently toward the finish.

Like someone who has already decided to put everything on the table.

🍷 Carruades de Lafite – “The Winning Combination”

A blend of elements working together in harmony.

Fresh fruit, precision, and structure all seem perfectly aligned.

Nothing dominates.

Nothing competes.

Each element supports the others.

And perhaps that is exactly what a winning combination looks like.

🍷 Lafite Rothschild – “The Strong Suit”

The strongest card in the hand.

The card you trust most.

Dark fruit, flowers, and graphite unfold slowly and quietly.

The texture is remarkably refined.

The tannins are silky and precise.

Freshness and depth gradually reveal themselves with calm confidence.

Everything feels perfectly placed.

Balanced.

Precise.

Composed.

And perhaps that is why Lafite Rothschild became The Strong Suit.

Not because it is the most dramatic card in the game.

But because it is the card you trust when it is finally time to place the bet.

Of course, this is only my interpretation.

Everyone at the same tasting received the same cards.

Read the same words.

Tasted the same wines.

Yet I suspect many of us walked away with entirely different readings of the game.

And perhaps that is exactly what I admired most about this campaign.

It never tells us what to think.

It simply gives us something worth thinking about.

Even days after the tasting ended, I found myself returning to the same question:

In the game of 2025,

which card was the most important one of all?
