Château La Fleur Morange

From a Garage Wine to Grand Cru Classé

Who would believe that a wine born from

a very small piece of land,

with only eight rows of vines,

back in 1999,

could one day become

a Grand Cru Classé

of Saint-Émilion?

This is La Fleur Morange —

a wine that started with a small intention,

and slowly grew,

with a spirit much larger than its size.

Our visit did not begin

with a grand gate

or an elegant sign.

It began with a warm greeting

and the sincere presence of Mathilde,

the daughter of the estate owners,

quietly arranging wine boxes in front of us.

No ceremony.

No formal introduction.

Just the feeling that

we were standing in a place

where people truly live and work.

The visit started in a simple way.

We sat together around a glass table.

A fireplace behind us.

A large window in front,

opening directly onto the vineyard.

That was the moment

when Mathilde began to tell us

the story of La Fleur Morange —

slowly,

without rushing,

and without trying to impress anyone.

A garage wine

that is not as romantic as it sounds

Many people call La Fleur Morange a garage wine.

It sounds cool.

It sounds dreamy.

But after listening to the people who actually make it,

I felt something different.

In real life,

a garage wine is not about being “cool”.

It is about making wine on a very small scale,

where you must take responsibility

for every single decision yourself.

Mathilde explained that her parents did not start

with a big investment,

but with reading —

especially the work of Émile Peynaud.

They tried.

They adjusted.

They learned, step by step,

from what was right in front of them.

Standing there and listening,

I felt something slowly settle.

This estate did not grow fast.

It grew with patience,

quietly.

And that is why today

the name La Fleur Morange

belongs to the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé —

a system that does not reward old reputation,

but proven quality

and consistency over time.

From the sitting room,

we moved into the cellar.

There is no fixed recipe here.

No rule saying,

“We do the same thing every year.”

Mathilde explained that

each vintage is a new decision,

built on the same principle:

being honest with the grapes of that year.

Fermentation tanks,

the position of the barrels —

every choice is made

not to create an image,

but to protect the truth of the wine.

Standing there,

I began to understand that

La Fleur Morange is not trying to “look big”.

It is confident enough

to stay quiet.

Then Mathilde took us outside,

into the vineyard.

The soil here is argilo-calcaire,

with iron beneath the surface —

clearly ideal for Merlot.

She explained terroir

without complicated words,

without slides.

Just by standing there,

feeling the soil under our feet,

looking at the rows of vines,

the meaning of terroir

became clear —

without anyone needing to conclude it for us.

Mathilde

A true femme de terrain

What I admire most about Mathilde

is not her title,

but the way she belongs to this place.

I would not be surprised

to see her in the vineyard one day,

driving a tractor the next,

and then in a meeting room —

before coming back

to explain the wines to us

with the same calm voice.

No separation of roles.

No separation between generations.

She does not simply “take over”.

She carries the spirit of the estate —

passed from one generation

to the next,

alive and real.

🍷 From the Glass

Château Paloma — Second Vin

Fresh fruit.

Easy to drink.

Light structure.

Soft tannins.

A gentle salty touch at the end.

A wine that feels like saying:

“Come in. Let’s get to know each other first.”

La Fleur Morange — Grand Cru Classé

Perfectly ripe fruit.

Clear minerality.

Deep, smooth texture.

Fine tannins.

A long finish —

without raising its voice.

With Thai food,

I imagine simply grilled beef,

not heavily seasoned,

letting the structure and calm strength of the wine

speak for itself.

Cuvée Mathilde — 100% Merlot

The wine with the clearest personality.

Fresh.

Precise.

Strong.

And honest.

With Thai food,

I would choose grilled pork or slow-cooked ribs,

soft in texture,

to highlight the direct and sincere character of this wine.

Just like the person behind it —

no extra explanation needed.

🖋️ After the Glass

La Fleur Morange

is not a place that tries to impress you

from the first step.

It is a place that slowly helps you understand that

effort,

commitment,

and consistency —

when practiced long enough,

and honestly enough —

can truly take a wine

from a garage

to Grand Cru Classé.

Without rushing.

Without shouting.
