Château Pichon Baron - A diary with power, polish… and a wink.
Some châteaux whisper.
Some châteaux wait.
And then there is Château Pichon Baron —
the kind that walks into the room impeccably dressed and lets everyone notice.
Founded in the late 17th century and classified as a 2ème Cru Classé in 1855, Pichon Baron doesn’t pretend to be discreet. It knows it is impressive—and it carries that confidence very comfortably.
The moment you arrive, almost everyone does the same thing:
they stop at the pool.
The famous reflective pool in front of the château has become a universal checkpoint for wine lovers. Phones come out. Silence follows.
It’s elegant, cinematic, and yes—very Instagrammable.
But unlike many beautiful things, it also has substance.
Because just beneath this perfect reflection lies part of the cellar.
Light filters down through glass, gently touching the barrels below.
Above: beauty and comfort.
Below: patience and discipline.
Classic Pichon Baron. Style upstairs, work downstairs.
Luxury that smiles back
The visit flows effortlessly.
Gravity-flow winemaking, clean lines, no drama.
Everything feels precise but welcoming — like being hosted by someone powerful who doesn’t need to prove it.
And then the tasting room.
Bright. Comfortable. A beautiful view that makes you want to sit just a little longer.
On the table, a detail that always makes me smile :
the name of our group, carefully prepared.
It’s a small thing, but it says a lot.
This is not just a tasting. It’s an invitation.
Before the glasses… the memories
I always enjoy stopping by the wine library.
Old vintages line the shelves, resting quietly.
And like clockwork, guests begin searching for their birth year.
It’s fascinating how serious people become at that moment.
Wine does that — it turns adults into sentimental children very quickly.
Then we taste.
Three wines, three personalities
(you’ve met them before)
Pichon Baron 2017 — The Gentleman
Impeccable manners. Perfect tailoring. Never raises his voice.
Blackcurrant, cedar, a touch of graphite.
Fine-grained tannins glide smoothly, acidity keeps everything sharp and alive.
This is a wine that holds the door for you—and somehow still arrives first.
Pair it with French duck breast or Thai grilled beef salad (ยำเนื้อย่าง).
Refined, balanced, quietly confident.
Pichon Baron 2018 — The CEO
Enters. Everyone notices. No small talk.
Blackberry, cassis, espresso, dark chocolate.
Firm tannins. Long finish. Serious structure.
This wine doesn’t explain the agenda — it is the agenda.
Best with beef Wellington or Thai massaman curry.
Rich, layered, powerful… but very much in control.
This one is not for now.
This one is for the future—and it knows it.
Les Griffons de Pichon Baron 2018 — The Charming Younger Brother
Smiles easily. Starts conversations. Everyone likes him.
Black cherry, violet, soft spice.
Round tannins, lively acidity, immediately approachable.
No decant. No pressure.
Just charcuterie, laughter, and maybe one glass too many.
If the CEO runs the company, this one runs the dinner party.
BW’s diary note (honest, as always)
If I’m choosing for tonight,
Les Griffons 2018 is coming with me. Easy, generous, and always a good idea.
If I’m choosing for the cellar—or the long game,
Pichon Baron 2018 remains the power move.
And if I want to remind myself that elegance never goes out of style,
I’ll come back to the Gentleman, 2017.
At Château Pichon Baron, power is polished, hospitality is intentional, and even the most serious wines know how to smile.
If these wine were people, which one would you invite to dinner ?
The Gentleman, the Ceo or the charming Younger Brother?
Let's share in the coments or tag the friend you'd bring along.
